THE MAYAN CALENDAR
By Antonio Calan
The calculation of the time according to the Maya ties together
three calendars. The Cholqij, is the sacred calendar structure by thirteen
months of twenty days each, with a total duration of 260 days. (13 times
20 = 260.) Its pace runs in agreement with the cycles of the moon and
in correspondence with the period of human gestation.
13 months x 20 days = 260 Sacred Calendar
18 months x 20 days = 360 the Solar Calendar
plus 5 days of conciliation = 360 + 5 days = 365 days
Katun = 365 x 400 years = 146,000 days, Long Count Calendar
At the moment one calendar becomes effectual is almost in totality
in the Mayan communities, where every 260 days solemn ceremonies are
made to announce the conclusion and the beginning of a new cycle. The
daily routine begins with B'atz and follows E, Aj, Ix, T'zikin, K'AT,
Kan, Keme, Kej, Q'anil, Toj and Tz'i.
The Ab' or Solar Calendar, orders the tropical or solar year that
is to say, the time which the Earth uses in its movement rotating around
the sun. The exactitude of this calendar was calculated with four digits
after the comma, that is to say, 365.2421 days. Nowadays computers have
calculated a period of 365.2422 days.
This
calendar consists of 365 days, divided in 18 months by 20 days plus
a month of five days with a total of 365 days, which is the assigned
number that symbolizes the union of the divine, and the human, necessary
for the establishment of the great totality required. This short month
is dedicated to meditation and to great ceremonies, for reconciliation
through acts of mutual pardon and forgiveness for any offenses occurred
during the previous year.
Every 52 years, when the beginning of the Ab' agrees
with Cholq'ij, a special date occurs because a cycle is completed. This
gives rise to a new reordering and correction of any imbalances within
the society. Known as the long account, creating a registry of astronomical
facts, so by the end, it distinguishes without error the possibility
of one day between 136, 655,000. This is done with such a system that
a date could not be repeated in a lapse of 374,152 astronomical years.
The Mayan calendar is a mathematical
measurement that has been used from generation to generation in the diverse
Mayan regions. Currently there are different interpretations of the dates
that correspond to the period of where the Maya is in time. Some scholars,
who have compared the Gregorian calendar with the Mayan, do not agree
because of the changes that both the Gregorian and Christian calendars
have faced , compared to the brief adjustments that the Mayan priests
have made presently. Some of them are concerned with the date of the
fulfillment of the Baktunes cycle, which has 144,000 days, that is estimated
that will occur in 2012.
However, the Long Count Calendar doesn't have 360 days. It's contain 365
days, then if someone use 360 days it wrong. Some non mayan are making
wrong calculations and it will create issues, because on 2012 nothing will
happen as movies and groups of interest are pursuing.
